Formerly known as Eastern Transvaal, the province has been more aptly renamed Mpumalanga – the land of the rising sun in siSwati.

The landscape, characterised by breathtaking scenery and featuring some of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls, offers exceptional bird-watching, game viewing and fishing opportunities. In fact, Mpumalanga is a haven for nature lovers providing special experiences of rare and unique species such as the blue swallows and wild horse community outside Kaapsehoop, as well as Verloren Valei Nature Reserve where all three endangered cranes can be found.

Also known as the gateway to the Kruger National Park, the province’s idyllic villages and small towns offer a range of top-class accommodation options for memorable, relaxing stays.

Each corner of Mpumalanga has a tale to tell of hunters, pioneers, soldiers and fortune seekers. As legends and mysteries unfold, discover the joys and losses of the many inhabitants of this region – from prehistoric man and indigenous tribes to warring Boer fighters, gold-seeking miners and industrious foresters.

Fruit and farming have also played a pivotal role in the province’s growth and development, and quality produce from the fertile Crocodile Valley can be purchased at many roadside stalls, including various subtropical fruits, citrus, avocado products and nuts.

Experience a journey into the true heartland of South Africa, explore its history, culture, natural wonders and lose yourself in its warm hospitality.
